If you can feel cold air around your windows in October, January is going to be expensive. A lot of Wayne homes were built in the 1950s through the 1970s, and many still have original windows or first-generation vinyl replacements from the '90s. Both lose heat fast. Here's how to decide whether it's time and what a replacement project usually looks like.
Signs it's time to replace
- Fog or condensation between the panes (the seal has failed)
- Sashes that won't stay up, stick, or need a stick to prop open
- Soft or rotted wood at the sill or frame
- Drafts you can feel with your hand on a windy day
- Ice or heavy condensation on the inside of the glass in winter
One or two bad windows can often be repaired. If most of the house shows these signs, replacing them together is usually cheaper per window and gives you a consistent look.
Typical North Jersey costs
These are typical installed ranges for standard double-hung sizes; your price depends on size, style, and the condition of the openings:
- Vinyl replacement windows: about $650–$1,200 per window installed
- Fiberglass or composite: about $1,100–$2,000 per window
- Wood or clad-wood: about $1,400–$2,500+ per window
- Bay, bow, or large picture windows: often $3,500–$9,000 each
Rotted sills, new exterior trim (capping), and interior trim replacement add cost. A good estimate lists those items separately so you can compare apples to apples.
Insert vs. full-frame replacement
Insert (pocket) replacement keeps your existing frame and trim and slides a new window into the opening. It's faster, less messy, and costs less, and it works well when the old frame is solid and square. Full-frame replacement removes everything down to the rough opening. It costs more but lets the installer fix rot, add insulation, and flash the opening properly. If there's any sign of water damage around the window, full-frame is usually the right call.
Timing: order now, install before the deep cold
Most custom-sized windows take roughly 3–6 weeks to arrive after ordering. Installation itself is fast: a typical house can be done in one to three days, with each opening closed up the same day it's opened. Installs can happen in winter, but crews move faster and caulk cures better in milder weather, so fall orders get the best scheduling. Check with the Wayne building department on whether your project needs a permit; your contractor should handle it if one is required.
